Mzimba Coffee farmers have formed a family farming group where they will be raising seedlings and growing coffee in a group setting in order to encourage and promote each other. Currently the group is comprised of 4 farming families with a total of 7 farmers and they have managed to raise 22,000 coffee seedlings. Having farmers working in a group setting will be an advantage to the organisation as well as the farmers because it will create a strong foundation and ensures continuity as the members will be pushing each other to fulfil the commitments and plans agreed.
Working in a group setting ensures that there is equal opportunity and empowers women to prepare themselves for success in the business. Currently the group is being chaired by a woman
AS of now the immediate plans for the group is to recruit more members especially the youth and the first step is having their children involved as members.
This as a pilot Mzuzu Coffee Union will be monitoring it to ensure its success and will replicate it in other areas.
